A small, dull, useful object. The HP33 trims nose and ear hair with a rotating stainless steel head that cuts without pulling, and it shows you how much battery is left instead of dying mid-use. It sits in our trimmers and shavers range.

How it cuts

The head is a rotary design: an outer guard with slots, an inner blade turning behind it. Hair enters the slots and is cut, while the guard keeps the blade off your skin. This is why a proper trimmer is a different object from scissors — there is no pinching, and nothing sharp reaches the inside of your nose.

The display

A digital readout shows the remaining charge. On a device most people use for thirty seconds a week, this is the difference between it working when you reach for it and finding it flat. Charging is over USB and takes roughly one and a half to two hours.

Cleaning and care

The head detaches for cleaning, which matters more here than on most grooming tools — trimmed hair collects inside the guard and will dull the cut if left. Rinse the head, let it dry fully, and refit it. The body is ABS plastic; the head is stainless steel.
